As a Papa Pal companion caregiver, you can help others in numerous ways. Papa Pal visits focus on companionship. Papa Pal visits can also include lending a hand with everyday things like car rides, house tasks, teaching basic technology, light exercise, and pet care. But matter the task at hand, Papa Pals and Papa members enjoy each other's company. If you're a new Papa Pal, use this short guide to building connections as you meet new Papa members.

In fact, building connections is what being a Papa Pal is all about. It’s an enriching experience for everyone. For you, it’s a rewarding job. And for the Papa member, it can be the high point in their day.

Working as a Papa Pal, you can offer the best support by making a personal connection with each Papa member. And, you can accomplish it in the following ways:

Try to find topics that you have in common. Asking questions and being a good listener is a way to discover a Papa member's interests. This helps to turn a casual chat into a good conversation, so you can relate to each other.

There are many ways to start a conversation with someone new, and sometimes it might feel intimidating. As long as you remain genuine and mindful during the conversation, you have nothing to worry about. 

When we share information about ourselves, we create a space where the other person feels comfortable opening up about themselves. Maybe you recently went on a trip and took pictures, or you’re artistic and just created something beautiful. When you share something that you're passionate about, you allow the other person to get to know you better.

A great way to learn about someone’s interests is by asking simple questions about their favorite time of year, favorite movies, and favorite local destination, as well as hobbies. This could include games, puzzles, movies, books, magazines, outdoor activities, museums, sports, exercises, cooking, and much more. 

One of the greatest ways to build a connection as a Papa Pal is by sharing life stories. Your Papa member may love to tell stories and might not have someone to tell them to. Listening to each other's stories can be a fulfilling experience for both of you.

Everyone leads such different lives. It’s important to listen to each other's stories to widen your perspective. By listening, we can connect and learn how to be there for each other more often.
